- If the DPF warning light blinks (in vehicles without a multi-information display) or a warning message appears on the multi-information display stating, "DPF Filter Full, See Owner's Manual" (in vehicles with a multi-information display), follow one of the steps below to ignite the accumulated diesel particles.
Igniting Diesel Particles While Driving:
To ignite the accumulated diesel particles in the filter, the following driving methods are recommended: *¹
- Drive continuously (e.g., for 20–30 minutes at approximately 60 km/h).
- Avoid short trips or drive continuously (e.g., leave the engine running for an extended period).
Ensure the engine is warmed up before driving to ignite the diesel particles in the filter.
If the engine is cold, warm it up by driving the vehicle in a lower gear to increase engine speed. *²
- Vehicles Without a Multi-Information Display:
The warning light will turn off once the diesel particle ignition process is completed. However, depending on driving conditions, such as traffic congestion, the accumulation of diesel particles may increase, and the warning light might not turn off.
If the warning light blinks again after driving, press the DPF system button to manually ignite the accumulated diesel particles in the filter.
Vehicles With a Multi-Information Display:
The warning message will disappear from the multi-information display once the ignition process is completed. However, depending on driving conditions, such as traffic, the accumulation of diesel particles may persist the warning message on the multi- information display may not disappear.
If the warning message does not disappear after driving, press the DPF system button to manually ignite the accumulated diesel particles in the filter.
It is not possible to ignite the accumulated diesel particles in the filter while driving at altitudes exceeding 4,000 meters above sea level.
*¹ Pay careful attention to weather, road conditions, terrain, traffic, and follow traffic laws while driving.
*² Depending on conditions, it may be necessary to shift to a lower gear until the engine speed increases to 3,000 RPM. If the engine coolant temperature or exhaust gas temperature is low, the ignition process may take a long time or may not be possible.
Manually Igniting Accumulated Diesel Particles by Pressing the DPF System Button:
Warning:
During the ignition process, observe the following safety precautions:
- Failure to do so may result in serious injuries, such as burns from the hot exhaust pipe or hot exhaust gases or even cause a fire.
- Do not park the vehicle in areas where flammable materials, such as dry grass, are near the exhaust pipe.
- Ensure that no one is near the exhaust pipe.
- Do not perform the ignition process in an enclosed space, such as a garage.
- Do not touch the exhaust pipe or exhaust gases during the diesel particle ignition process.
Steps:
- Park the vehicle in a safe location.
- Shift the gear lever to the parking position (P) for automatic transmissions or to neutral (N) for manual transmissions and firmly engage the parking brake.
Do not turn off the engine.
Ensure that no flammable materials are near the exhaust pipe.
Make sure the engine is warmed up. If the engine is cold, warm it up by lightly pressing the accelerator pedal. *¹
- Press the DPF System Button:
For vehicles without a multi-information display:
The DPF warning light will illuminate, and the engine's idle speed will increase.
For vehicles equipped with a multi-information display
The DPF warning message, as shown in the illustration, will appear on the multi-information display, and the engine's idle speed will increase.
The ignition process takes approximately 15–40 minutes to complete. *²
When the DPF warning light turns off (for vehicles without a multi-information display) or the DPF warning message disappears from the multi-information display (for vehicles equipped with it), it indicates that the engine idle speed has returned to its normal level.
The DPF system button may not function if the vehicle is at an altitude exceeding 4,000 meters above sea level.
*¹ Depending on conditions, it may be necessary to press the accelerator pedal to increase engine speed to 3,000 RPM. If the engine coolant temperature or exhaust gas temperature is low, the ignition process may take a long time or may not be possible.
*² The time required to ignite diesel particles varies with the outside temperature. Additionally, if engine speed remains around 2,000 RPM after 10 minutes of pressing the DPF system button, it may indicate low exhaust temperature. In such a case, press the accelerator pedal to run the engine at 3,000 RPM for a while.
- Pressing the accelerator pedal will interrupt the diesel particle ignition process. If this happens, restart the ignition process.
- Pressing the start pedal or clutch pedal (for manual transmissions) after pressing the DPF system button will also stop the ignition process. If the ignition process stops, restart it as soon as possible.
- After completing the ignition process, rev the engine a few times to clean the exhaust system.
- Vehicles equipped with a multi-information display: If the message "DPF Filter Full – Manual Regeneration Required, See Owner’s Manual" appears on the multi-information display, press the DPF system button to ignite the accumulated diesel particles in the filter.
- Vehicles without a multi-information display: If the DPF warning light blinks or the warning message "DPF Filter Full – Visit Dealer" is displayed on the multi-information display (for vehicles equipped with it), accompanied by an audible alert (and the malfunction indicator light illuminating), contact a Toyota dealer to inspect the vehicle immediately.
DPF Warning Light
Under the following driving conditions, the DPF warning light may blink (for vehicles without a multi-information display) or a DPF warning message may appear on the multi-information display (for vehicles equipped with it) more frequently than under normal conditions. *
- Driving at low speeds (e.g., 20 km/h or less).
- Frequently starting and stopping the engine (e.g., leaving the engine off for more than 10 minutes at a time).
*This may vary depending on weather, driving conditions, etc.
Notes:
If the malfunction indicator light (along with an audible warning) illuminates:
The malfunction indicator light will turn on if you continue driving while the DPF warning light is blinking (for vehicles without a multi-information display) or while a DPF warning message is displayed on the multi-information display (for vehicles equipped with it). Such a condition could lead to vehicle damage or increase the risk of an accident. Contact a Toyota dealer to inspect the vehicle immediately.
